Interface Design Flaws in Security Tools Create Hidden Risks for SOC Analysts

Maria Letta, lead interface designer at Garda, argues that poorly designed security product interfaces contribute to analyst fatigue and missed real threats in SOC environments. She draws parallels to historical incidents in aviation and nuclear power where confusing controls led to catastrophic errors. The article details four mechanisms: habituation from false alerts, automation bias reducing critical thinking, excessive cognitive load from complex data structures, and constant background anxiety from red dashboards. Examples include the 1979 Three Mile Island accident and the 2009 Air France 447 crash. Letta proposes four practical solutions focused on treating analysts as part of the security system rather than its weakest link. The piece emphasizes that human factor conclusions in incident reports often overlook interface-induced errors.
