OpenAI has rolled out a significant update that brings ChatGPT into closer integration with Google Chrome. The assistant can now read content from open tabs and carry out actions on behalf of the user without requiring manual copying of information into the chat interface.
Home users and corporations alike stand to benefit from the new capabilities in generative artificial intelligence. According to the official ChatGPT account on X, the assistant can handle a range of tasks including filling out forms, downloading files, sending messages, and organizing open tabs. Demonstrations showed the tool gathering data across multiple pages to complete complex comparisons, such as evaluating products by specifications, delivery timelines, and return conditions, or reviewing service tariffs to determine the most suitable option.
The extension also supports working with ChatGPT in a sidebar panel within Google Chrome. Users can discuss an article, obtain a summary of a report, or prepare an email while remaining on the source page. When combined with conversation history and connected plugins, more sophisticated workflows become possible, such as locating receipts in Gmail and populating expense reimbursement forms with the extracted data.
Among the showcased examples, OpenAI highlighted the assistant completing registration forms and stopping just before submission. The most notable change is the transition from simply explaining which buttons to press to directly performing the requested task inside the active browser tab.
