How Social Media Recommendation Algorithms Shape Content, Behavior, and Regulation Worldwide

Social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube rely on sophisticated recommendation systems that analyze user behavior to predict engagement rather than simply ordering posts chronologically. These algorithms form candidate sets and rank content using signals including watch time, likes, comments, and device data, creating personalized feeds that can diverge significantly between users. Research shows mixed effects on political views and mental health, with personalization capable of both amplifying polarization and reducing it depending on optimization goals. Regulatory responses vary: China mandates transparency and youth mode limits on Douyin, the EU's Digital Services Act requires non-profiled alternatives for large platforms, and Russia enforces disclosure rules under Federal Law No. 408-FZ since 2023. Practical steps allow users to reset recommendations and provide negative feedback to retrain feeds. The article debunks myths of dopamine addiction and inevitable radicalization while highlighting both risks and benefits of algorithmic curation.

Fake GTA and Ghost Casino Apps Flood Google Play Early Access with Scam Promises

Unscrupulous developers are exploiting Google Play's Early Access program to distribute applications that make false promises of earnings through fake games and casino experiences. These apps lack public ratings and reviews, preventing disappointed users from warning others before installation. Bitdefender reports that the scheme is heavily promoted via advertisements on TikTok, Facebook, and other social networks, often featuring deepfakes of actors, athletes, and celebrities to build credibility. Users are lured with offers of PayPal payments, cryptocurrency, gift cards, and casino jackpots, but the apps deliberately slow progress near withdrawal thresholds. After installation, the software displays generous virtual winnings that never translate into real payouts. The campaign relies on aggressive advertising and misleading interfaces to maximize installations before users realize the fraud.

Meta Allows Over 50 Paid Ads Sexualizing Minors to Run on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads

Meta's advertising moderation systems failed to detect and remove more than 50 paid advertisements containing sexualized images of minors across its major platforms. The ads, some generated using generative AI tools, appeared on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads over a nine-month period. Researchers at Tech Transparency Project identified that several of these advertisements remained active into early August. The content was not organic user posts but commercially purchased ads that bypassed Meta's review processes. The incident highlights ongoing weaknesses in automated and human moderation of paid promotional material involving prohibited themes. Tech Transparency Project emphasized that the scale and persistence of the ads point to systemic gaps in Meta's enforcement mechanisms for child safety policies.

Russian Ministry Proposes Mandatory Phone-Number Authentication for Foreign Websites and Apps

The Russian Ministry of Digital Development has drafted new rules requiring foreign websites and applications to authenticate users in Russia exclusively through phone numbers. The measure forms part of the third anti-fraud package known as Antifraud 3.0 and would eliminate email, social-media logins and other traditional methods. Foreign service operators would also be obliged to retain registration, login and account-deletion records for three years and to hand them over to Russian law-enforcement agencies upon request. Amendments are planned for Article 8 of the law On Information, with submission to the State Duma scheduled for autumn 2026. Experts warn that many international companies may refuse to build separate authentication flows for the Russian market, potentially leading some services to exit Russia entirely. The proposal also raises enforcement questions for already-blocked platforms such as Facebook and Instagram owned by Meta.

Personal Digital Resilience: Strategies to Secure Access Chains and Preserve Data Portability

The article explores how individuals can strengthen their digital infrastructure against service outages, lost access, and data loss without turning maintenance into a full-time project. It defines digital resilience through two pillars: security against unauthorized access and reduced dependence on any single provider, especially when regulators in different jurisdictions interfere. The author maps real-world processes to digital services, access methods, and stored data, then outlines recovery formulas for each failure scenario. Practical steps include auditing password-manager entries, eliminating circular dependencies, separating recovery roots by jurisdiction, and exporting data in portable formats. Special attention is given to secrets such as TOTP seeds and recovery codes, which are stored in an encrypted offline archive whose master password exists only on paper. The resulting structure features two independent trees rooted at Yandex and Google, with all critical services backed by verifiable exports and tested recovery paths.
