Google Developing Voice-Activated Emergency SOS Feature for Android Devices

Google is working on a voice-activated Emergency SOS function for Android that would allow users to summon help without touching their smartphone. The feature, discovered in the Personal Safety app code by Android Authority, appears to trigger after the user says the word 'Help' three times in sequence. Once activated, the system would automatically determine location, begin emergency video recording, and place a call to emergency services. The current method requires pressing the power button five times, which can be impractical in certain situations. Additional code strings suggest optional voice confirmation with phrases such as 'Say yes to continue' and 'Say cancel to dismiss Emergency SOS'. The function is not yet available to users and may eventually reach non-Pixel devices running the Personal Safety app, though supported languages and models remain undisclosed.

Google Play Store to Add Pause and Resume Option for App Downloads

Google is preparing a long-awaited feature for the Play Store that will let Android users pause app downloads and resume them later without losing progress. The capability was discovered by Android Authority researchers while examining the code of Play Store version 53.0. Currently the store only allows users to cancel a download entirely, but the new update will introduce a dedicated Pause button next to each active download. Once paused, the item remains visible in the built-in download manager, allowing users to resume directly from the list without searching for the app again. The function is intended to help users manage bandwidth, conserve mobile data, or delay large game downloads until a Wi-Fi connection is available. Although Google has not yet made an official announcement, the feature is already functional in testing, suggesting a release may arrive sooner than the previously indicated 2026 timeframe.

Google Introduces Multi-Step Verification for Android APK Sideloading to Combat Fraud

Google has begun rolling out an enhanced installation flow for Android apps installed outside of Google Play. Users must first confirm that no one is coercing them to enable unknown sources, then reboot their device and wait 24 hours before the option becomes available. The new process includes explicit warnings about scammers who pressure victims into enabling sideloading, noting that legitimate organizations never require this setting. After the waiting period, users can grant the permission for seven days or indefinitely. The change does not affect ADB installations, preserving a workaround for advanced users. Google states the delay is intended to give people time to reconsider before enabling potentially risky settings. An Android Authority poll showed 88 percent of respondents expect further restrictions in the future.
